Wonder by R. J. Palacio

Hi everyone ! So sorry I was away for a while! Well I’m back with a new book review for you ! 🙂 😀

It’s a good one !

Have you ever read something that inspired you so much that as soon as you finished it you wanted to instantly start reading it all over again?

That’s how this book, this beautifully written book,  made me feel.

Do yourself a favour and read this story.  ❤

(THERE IS ALSO GONNA BE A MOVIEEEEEEEEE ❤ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngiK1gQKgK8&t=47s  so so excited to watch it !!!! )

Our main character here is a humble ten year old boy called August but you can call him Auggie. He’s an ordinary ten year old boy, on the inside.

He loves Star wars, and playing his Xbox, and kissing his pet dog Daisy and eating ice cream…..

What about on the outside you’re thinking right ? Well that’s the tricky part.

Auggie was born with a facial abnormality that required him to have many surgeries on his face since birth, that resulted into him having to be home schooled till he was ten years old.  It also meant that his face was very different from everyone else’s. It did not look the best….and he knew it, he used to wear an astronaut’s helmet when he went outside so he can hide his face and feel safe.

The book is split into chapters being narrated by different characters from the story (which I love !!), it helps you understand the point of view of the people around him like for example his sister. She explains what it was like growing up with a young brother that had to be constantly operated on and hospitalised. There are also chapters from his peers (good and not so good :/). The first good part of the book is being narrated by Auggie himself and I have to tell you, he’s a sweetheart. I loved reading when he was narrating. He’s so sweet and humble, I instantly wrapped this character around my heart !

“Here’s what I think: the only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way.” – Auggie Pullman

Upon turning ten his very protective and loving parents have a serious discussion between themselves and admit that they cannot protect Auggie from the outside world forever and that it is time for him to go to school with the other kids. They were so scared for him! Can you imagine ? Like school isn’t already tough enough for kids ! Imagine having to send your little one knowing that bullying is gonna be a high chance here.

Auggie resists for a while before accepting to go to school. Do you blame him tho ? I don’t.

The book will take you step by step on what this little boy went through trying to find his way into the school and by finding his way I mean, finding his true friends. It was a roller coaster of a journey.

There are parts where I cried reading this book because even though it is a fictional story it is written in a very realistic way and includes very realistic cases of bullying.

I will not spoil this story for you but I have a few words that I would like to share.

This book has taught me such an important lesson:  If you can choose to be anything in this world, choose kind.

“Kinder than is necessary. Because it’s not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.”

Yes, choose kind.

This book has shown me what the power of kindness can achieve. True friendships, lessons, growth, admiration and most of all self acceptance and happiness.

Why are they not using this book in schools ? It would be brilliant to share with young and still developing minds ! I think it would really help everyone understand how important it is to treat each other with equal respect and love and that just because that someone is different doesn’t mean that are ok to bully. It’s beautiful.

“It’s not enough to be friendly. You have to be a friend.” R.J. Palacio, Wonder

It is a story of someone that is trying to fit in, but he was truly born to stand out (in a good way). It will teach you to not be deceived by appearances and to not follow the crowd ! By not following the crowd I mean, not talking to someone because all the others aren’t too.

This book inspired me so much, it is a truly beautiful story and such an easy read too ! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that just wants a warm fuzzy feeling kind of book, something to inspire them to be a good person, something different. 🙂 After reading this story I felt so happy that I chose to, it will be with me for the rest of my life as it has taught me so many things.

“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.” ― R.J. Palacio, Wonder

With love, friendship and some courage, you can achieve anything ! Anything ! If someone is ever mean or cruel to you start by loving them first. Be kind to unkind people, they need it the most. It is with the absence of love and kindness that people turn to become bitter and angry. Love conquers all.

Also, I loved this story sooooo much that I purchased another book related to it. It’s Called : ”365 Days of Wonder” which includes 365 quotes from the book all positive in their own way, I am very happy with it and I actually do read one a day and contemplate on it. I have my own little wonder collection now ^.^ ❤ ❤ ❤
