Caraval by Stephanie Garber

New book reviewwwwwwww 😀

Hi again bookworms !

I have finally found the time for Caraval !! ❤ ❤ ❤

Boy oh boy, this book had loads of hype around it and was getting me curious and curious so I finally read it !

And guess what ? I LOVED IT ! I had never read anything circussy (if that is even a word lol) before !

Stephanie Garber is brilliant in creating this whole new magical world unlike I read about before ! yay!

I’m just gonna start by talking about the book cover. I have purchased the hardback version (of course lol). Upon feeling it, it’s nice and smooth and kinda feels like velvet, I think that the artwork chosen is really cool too and it matches with the story, magical and mysterious !

Upon removing the book sleeve I was soooo happy to see the hardcover ❤ it actually has a golden carnival tent printed on it ! It looks really nice on top of the black background. By the way ! Calling all collectors, the hard cover books come in different golden prints ! Apart from the circus tent like I have there are three more different ones ! One with a dress, a clock and a rose ! Omg I am so tempted to buy all of them…hah.

Screen Shot 2017-09-19 at 16.59.23 <— TOO PRETTY ❤

The book also has a very cool map of Caraval, I love it when they have maps, I always flick through it along the way of reading the story to see where the characters are.

I would recommend this book to anyone who:

  • Love magic, DUH ! 😛
  • Loves the circus and its mystery ! also DUH :p
  • Enjoys a good unique story every once in a while
  • Enjoys some suspense ! 😀
  • Loves a good hint of romance 😉

Anyways :), about the story:

The story is about two sisters, Scarlet and Donatella. From ever since they were little girls they have been told the most beautiful stories of the magical Caraval and it’s ringmaster, Master Legend himself.

They dreamt of going to the Caraval after every story they were told, their eyes wide and attentive each time someone spoke to them about it.

But Scarlet and Donatella were not the luckiest of the royal young maidens, their mother ran away from home a long time ago and left them alone with their evil father. He was a cruel man, so cruel that he beat the girls often if he felt that they disobeyed him.

“It’s better this way, sister. There’s more to life than staying safe…” ― Stephanie GarberCaraval

When the time came he arranged for Scarlet to marry, a man of whom he had chosen of course. Scarlet was happy at first, thinking that this marriage can be her way out of her father’s clutches. But what about her sister Tella? She can’t leave her behind.

“Every person has the power to change their fate if they are brave enough to fight for what they desire more than anything.” ― Stephanie GarberCaraval

She loved her sister, she really did. She always thought of ways to make her happy and to keep her safe. Scarlet had also been trying for the past seven years to convince Master Legend to come with the Caraval to their island so she can take her sister there on her birthday.

For seven straight years she sent the letters, he finally replied.

He finally replied to her saying that the Caraval is no longer travelling and that it is also now, by invitation only. As a gesture of goodwill he gives her two invitations.

And here our story begins.

(I will not go into too much detail as to not spoil the story for you) ❤

The journey to Caraval begins, and the girl’s lives are about to change forever.

Caraval is known for its wild magic, not many people are capable of handling it. Scarlet soon has to push herself to her limits when she discovers that Master Legend has taken her sister ! And that the object of this year’s game is to find Donatella !!!

“Welcome, welcome to Caraval! The grandest show on land or by sea. Inside you’ll experience more wonders than most people see in a lifetime. You can sip magic from a cup and buy dreams in a bottle. But before you fully enter into our world, you must remember it’s all a game.” ― Stephanie GarberCaraval

Scarlet will encounter many different things from, dresses with minds of their own, shifting rooms, unfair and crazy bargains, mysterious people, scary tunnels and so so much more !

Master legend was known to challenge his players to their breaking point, all are warned of the risks before playing but hear now, whoever wins the Caraval will win a wish.

Many that have played the game of Caraval have been driven into madness, there have been deaths aswell…..would you play the game of Caraval? I would.

How will Scarlet find Donatella in time before Caraval is over? How will she know if she is alive?

“Hope is a powerful thing. Some say it’s a different breed of magic altogether. Elusive, difficult to hold on to. But not much is needed.” ― Stephanie GarberCaraval

Fear not, Scarlet will have some help 😉 , but don’t think it will be easier, Master Legend enjoyed playing games, and those games may not be so fair most of the time.

A story full of adventure, magic, imagination and romance ! I could not put this book down once I started it! I really enjoyed it. A different type of fantasy/YA.

I keep wondering if there will every be a second book about this one…hmm maybe yes? Maybe no? I don’t know.

Thank you so much for reading 🙂

As always,

Peace

Kim

Maybe A Fox by Kathi Appelt and Alison Mcghee

I’m so happy to share another book review with you !! 😀 Had time to plan ahead this time 😉 ❤

So to get started about this one, I chose it randomly because from ever since I could remember, I have a had a huge fascination with foxes ❤ (still do and I probably will do for ever lol). I even have a fox tattoo haha ! Do you have any animal or book related tattoos ?

Anyway, that’s why I chose this one 🙂 A story about 2 sisters and fox <3.

Screen Shot 2017-09-19 at 14.36.48

I would recommend this book to anyone who:

  • Is looking for a good quick read, I read this one within a day.
  • It is a good book to get you out of your reading slump since it is so so easy to flow through it.
  • It is a nice change from all the exaggerated fantasy stories that are so popular (don’t get me wrong ! I love that genre 🙂 but I like to change it up a bit too 🙂 ). It still has a small element of fantasy though, VERY SMALL.
  • It is a good book to give to someone that is young and wants to be introduced to the amazing world of reading.
  • For those that love all things animal and nature related ❤

Our story here takes us to a sweet house by the woods.

Sylvie and Jules.

Jules and Sylvie.

Two sisters that are unbelievably close, even though they have their differences they are truly best friends and love eachother dearly. They lost their mum at a young age and are now being raised by their dear dad. Not easy for him to raise 11 year old Jules and 12 year old Sylvie by himself, but somehow he does it the best way he can. ❤

The girls both loved the woods, Sylvie was fast,  faster than fast, so fast she was the fastest girl in school !! It was her daily challenge to run, run and run as fast as she can, it was her dream to be the fastest.

Jules loved collecting rocks, she was a rock expert. They relaxed her, the natural minerals she collected. She would spend hours just sorting them into categories and memorizing their names and making sure that she chose her favourites carefully.

They are sweet kids. The way the story introduces and describes them is brilliant. Two young motherless girls looking out for each other, growing up yet still finding time for mischief in their own little ways. Thick as thieves their dad called them.

Their father trusted them very much to catch the school bus on time every morning and to make sure that obeyed his rules. Very simple rules but also very important rules:

  • Do not get out of earshot of the house.
  • Do not mess with wild animals.
  • Do not miss the bus.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, go near the slip.

Four simple rules, the last one being the most important. ‘’The slip’’ is a place that their father was referring to.

It is a notorious place in the woods where lives had been lost. It was where the river went underground with rough waters. There were stories of people that died upon falling into it. Their father always trusted Jules and Sylvie to play in the woods as long as they stayed away from this place.

One day the girls woke up from school and to their amazement they saw snow out from their window !!! It made them so happy ❤ It made them happy because when they had snow they always had fun honouring their late mother by building snow families ❤ right outside their house. It was a tradition that she had started and when she passed away the girls promised each other they would keep it alive in memory of their mum ❤

They were all excited and rushing to go out and build the family to be just in time for school too !

They finished the snow family and it looked beautiful to them, they were happy, Sylvie always told Jules how their mum loved new snow just like they did. Jules was younger when their mum passed away and had little memory of her.

They were good kids, but like all kids, they didn’t always obey their dad.

His biggest DO NOT: Do not, under any circumstances, go near the slip.

Don’t get me wrong, they never went close, well at least never went dangerously close. They did however, throw rocks into the slip. Not just any rocks though ! Jules had specifically collected a pile of what she called wish rocks, perfectly smooth rocks in the shape of pebbles.

Their smoothness aided the girls in writing their wish on them before throwing them into the slip. (with water proof marker of course).

And on that day they built the snow family, Sylvie desperately wanted to use the wish rock she had. She felt that the new snow made the day lucky. So she looked at her sister, told her she’ll be back in a flash and ran as fast as she could to make it back in time to catch the bus for school.

Jules tried to tell her to stay but Sylvie was stubborn, determined. So she went.

Jules waited and waited, and worried too. Her faster than fast sister was taking too long to come back. Jules called out her name to the woods. For nothing.

Her sister was gone.

And at that same exact moment that Jules realised her sister wasn’t coming back, a fox cub was born. A tiny little fox cub. ❤

What happened to Sylvie ?

How will Jules go to school without her sister? Who will she build snow families with now? How will Jules be able to face the world without her best friend? Her sister is gone.

Why does the fox cub feel Jules’s pain ? As if they are connected ? The young cub feels the child’s heart begin broken…

I won’t spoil this story for you but I promise you that it will make you teary as you go along and read it.

It is sweet, beautiful, emotional and powerful. The beauty of nature, family, love and faith written in this short story.

I loved every page of it.

Sylvie and Jules.

Jules and Sylvie….and a tiny fox cub.

Wonder by R. J. Palacio

Hi everyone ! So sorry I was away for a while! Well I’m back with a new book review for you ! 🙂 😀

It’s a good one !

Have you ever read something that inspired you so much that as soon as you finished it you wanted to instantly start reading it all over again?

That’s how this book, this beautifully written book,  made me feel.

Do yourself a favour and read this story.  ❤

(THERE IS ALSO GONNA BE A MOVIEEEEEEEEE ❤ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngiK1gQKgK8&t=47s  so so excited to watch it !!!! )

Our main character here is a humble ten year old boy called August but you can call him Auggie. He’s an ordinary ten year old boy, on the inside.

He loves Star wars, and playing his Xbox, and kissing his pet dog Daisy and eating ice cream…..

What about on the outside you’re thinking right ? Well that’s the tricky part.

Auggie was born with a facial abnormality that required him to have many surgeries on his face since birth, that resulted into him having to be home schooled till he was ten years old.  It also meant that his face was very different from everyone else’s. It did not look the best….and he knew it, he used to wear an astronaut’s helmet when he went outside so he can hide his face and feel safe.

The book is split into chapters being narrated by different characters from the story (which I love !!), it helps you understand the point of view of the people around him like for example his sister. She explains what it was like growing up with a young brother that had to be constantly operated on and hospitalised. There are also chapters from his peers (good and not so good :/). The first good part of the book is being narrated by Auggie himself and I have to tell you, he’s a sweetheart. I loved reading when he was narrating. He’s so sweet and humble, I instantly wrapped this character around my heart !

Screen Shot 2017-09-19 at 12.36.44

“Here’s what I think: the only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way.” – Auggie Pullman

Upon turning ten his very protective and loving parents have a serious discussion between themselves and admit that they cannot protect Auggie from the outside world forever and that it is time for him to go to school with the other kids. They were so scared for him! Can you imagine ? Like school isn’t already tough enough for kids ! Imagine having to send your little one knowing that bullying is gonna be a high chance here.

Auggie resists for a while before accepting to go to school. Do you blame him tho ? I don’t.

The book will take you step by step on what this little boy went through trying to find his way into the school and by finding his way I mean, finding his true friends. It was a roller coaster of a journey.

There are parts where I cried reading this book because even though it is a fictional story it is written in a very realistic way and includes very realistic cases of bullying.

I will not spoil this story for you but I have a few words that I would like to share.

This book has taught me such an important lesson:  If you can choose to be anything in this world, choose kind.

“Kinder than is necessary. Because it’s not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.”

Yes, choose kind.

This book has shown me what the power of kindness can achieve. True friendships, lessons, growth, admiration and most of all self acceptance and happiness.

Why are they not using this book in schools ? It would be brilliant to share with young and still developing minds ! I think it would really help everyone understand how important it is to treat each other with equal respect and love and that just because that someone is different doesn’t mean that are ok to bully. It’s beautiful.

“It’s not enough to be friendly. You have to be a friend.” R.J. Palacio, Wonder

It is a story of someone that is trying to fit in, but he was truly born to stand out (in a good way). It will teach you to not be deceived by appearances and to not follow the crowd ! By not following the crowd I mean, not talking to someone because all the others aren’t too.

This book inspired me so much, it is a truly beautiful story and such an easy read too ! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that just wants a warm fuzzy feeling kind of book, something to inspire them to be a good person, something different. 🙂 After reading this story I felt so happy that I chose to, it will be with me for the rest of my life as it has taught me so many things.

“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.” ― R.J. Palacio, Wonder

With love, friendship and some courage, you can achieve anything ! Anything ! If someone is ever mean or cruel to you start by loving them first. Be kind to unkind people, they need it the most. It is with the absence of love and kindness that people turn to become bitter and angry. Love conquers all.

Also, I loved this story sooooo much that I purchased another book related to it. It’s Called : ”365 Days of Wonder” which includes 365 quotes from the book all positive in their own way, I am very happy with it and I actually do read one a day and contemplate on it. I have my own little wonder collection now ^.^ ❤ ❤ ❤

*cries so much*

Like I said before, do yourself a favour and read this book.

Choose kind.

Thank you so much for reading 🙂 I hope you enjoyed it.

As always, peace ❤

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Hi everyone I’m back with a new book review for you 😀 . This book made me think deeply. It really did. Check this out.

Firstly I would like to thank my local book store – Agenda Bookshop for sponsoring me this book.

Secondly, I advise you to keep an open mind when reading my review this time as this can be a sensitive subject for many, I might have a different opinion than most about this tale.

After finishing the book I don’t even know exactly how I feel about it yet. I had a mixture of positive and negative vibes, the best way to share my thoughts exactly, I think is by breaking down how I felt into sections. A – Why I read it, B- Positive and finally C- Negative.

Brief overview of the story before I move over to my next point:

The book is about a highschool student that took her own life by swallowing a bunch of pills. Yeah rough I know, totally shocking and sad. Before ending her life she wanted people to understand why and more scarily, because of who she did it.

‘’If you’re listening, you’re too late.’’ – From the 13 reasons why book cover.

Out of being hurt and feeling voiceless and unheard she recorded 13 tapes for the 13 people that because of their actions, she felt the need give up and end her life. She made sure that her tapes will be heard after she passed away and made it that each tape was about each person, having her explaining in detail how their actions drove her to do this.

‘’ I hope you’re ready, because I’m about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you’re listening to these tapes, you’re one of the reasons why. ‘’ – Hannah Baker

She blackmailed them into passing them on to each other by threatening to publish a second copy of the tapes publicly if they don’t pass them on (she had made an arrangement with someone to publish them in her name if they are not listened to as she intended).

Our main character here is Clay (apart from the girl from the tapes Hannah Baker). The entire book is all about Clay’s (PS Clay is the one you can see in the GIF above) journey while listening to the tapes that Hannah left. It was his turn to hear them. He could not believe that he was on one of the tapes and went through an emotional roller coaster to discover what she wanted to let him know.

So, onto my next point.

A.Why I chose to read this book (and not watch the series).

There was so much hype around this story, when the series came out many of my friends, colleagues etc kept telling me what an amazing show it is and that how much it teaches people. Ok, so I observed their reactions to watching the show. Mostly where the same (I will not completely give away what their reactions were for now as it will be mentioned in my later points). At this point, I am surrounded by people that are loving every bit of this story, so I got curious and chose it to be my next book to read when I discovered that there was also a book of course. I always prefer the book to the movie/series.

So that is why I chose to read this story, to see what all the fuss is about.

Everyone has their own point of view, here is mine.

B.The positive points that this book made me think about:

Don’t get me wrong, I do not think that there was anything fun about this story, what I mean by positive is a lesson. This story has lessons.

This book. I’m sure that Jay Asher (our author here) wrote this story with good intentions. Meaning that he wanted the world to see how powerful and dangerous words can be and the importance of how we treat others and how younger generations have more sensitive minds as they are still growing up and getting to know who they really are.

When I was reading along and learning why this girl felt that she needed to give up on life I could see and relate to some of the things she was describing that she went through (as always I will try my best not to spoil the story for you).

The tapes vary in many ways, some tapes are much harder to read through….because some of the actions that she describes occurring to her are quite cruel, there is though….one good tape (I will not say whom about or what she says).

Most of us look back at our high school (here in Malta we call it secondary school) years and say ‘’thank god they are over’’, others say ‘’I wish I was still there’’ do you see my point here? There are TWO perspectives. TWO.

Hannah wanted the people around her to understand that too because in the first tape she talks about how her life at school instantly became harder because of a rumor that started going around about her and another boy (he actually started this rumor).

Yes, a rumor. A rumor that everyone at her school started to believe and started to spread, people were treating her differently. She was true to herself and knew that it was all lies but when people gang up on you like that you start to feel bullied and betrayed. So back to my first point, there are TWO perspectives. TWO points of view. The real story that actually happened and the rumor that didn’t actually happen. If the people at her school realised this  (the two points of view) they wouldn’t have easily believed that rumor but they did. We should not believe everything we hear about our peers and even worse – we should not encourage spreading gossip. If people gossip with you, they will gossip about you- Keep that in mind. Lessons.

“No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same.” — Hannah Baker

Talk about ideas, cool subjects, music, sports, movies or anything else with your friends, just avoid gossiping. If you don’t want to be gossiped about, don’t gossip about other people fair and square. Now, I know that we are not perfect none of us and sometimes we don’t realise when we are doing it, but we always have a choice to stop or change the conversation. Always take your time to think before speaking, especially if it’s about someone else. Don’t always believe what you hear.

Ok rant over about that.

This book also made me realise how important it is to ask your friends ‘’are you ok? You wanna talk? Wanna go for a coffee and chill and talk?’’ if you see that they are showing signs of  an emotional struggle – by that I mean, extremely sad, isolating themselves, not making an effort to socialize… you know. Don’t get me wrong, not all sad moments of our life will lead to what Hannah suffered but simply asking your friend if they’re ok is something so simple yet, great. Maybe they have just been through a horrible break up, or they just lost someone, or they didn’t pass the one exam that they studied so hard for, or they didn’t get that awesome job that they wanted…. I myself have had days when I’m not feeling my best or not in my best mood, talking to someone always makes me feel better. It can never go wrong if you are relaxing and just saying out loud how you feel and then realise that it’s not the end of the world, learn from you life venture and move on and then eventually laugh about it. But sometimes if we keep everything all bottled up the negative thoughts will take over and we will be stuck in an endless cycle of negativity.

What I just wrote about asking someone if they are ok is simple right ? Check on your friends? You’re probably saying ‘’well duhh kim’’. Well if someone would have asked those questions to Hannah she might have not driven herself to end her life. See it now ?

One of my favourite sayings is ‘’Always be kind, you never know what someone  might be going through.’’ Hannah’s fellow students and ‘’friends’’ failed to do so.

Be kind always, even if to someone that has hurt you. Do it as a reflection of what a good person you are and out of having a strong character. There are good people in this world if you can’t find one, be one.

This book has also made me see how bad bullying can get and that how the ‘’bully’’ is the one with major issues not the ‘’bullied’’. If a person enjoys causing pain and suffering to another, they indeed have a problem. How can you inflict emotional pain on another human being and go on about with your day like it was nothing ? Or by saying that you were just joking ? How can you make the victim believe that they have a problem when the one picking on them is you? Some of the things that Hannah describes in the tapes are very realistic and that can easily happen between students at school. This story may have been good for parents of teens to see and remember how hard high school life can be sometimes. Especially when you feel all alone.

I mentioned earlier about all the reactions that I saw in the people that watched the series and were telling me about it. They intrigued me because everyone was saying how much this series made them realise how careful we need to be about how we treat people around us…..but when they were showing me this reaction I kept thinking to myself, I want to look at this in a different way and that is why I have come to my final point. The negative side of this story. My other perspective.

B.The not so positive thoughts that this book made me think about:

Ok so, like I said earlier in my review, I’m sure that this book was carefully written with good intentions but a subject as sensitive as such can have many different effects on many different people.

It is a book full of lessons true, I learnt from it. Learnt how important it is to treat others nicely and to think before you speak and to not miss certain signs of distress when around your friends.

But what I was not too keen on about this story is, how the act of suicide may have looked heroic to some. Bear with me, I will try to explain what I mean in the best way that I can.

Hannah is constantly talking during our book here since we are going through the tapes along with Clay. Clay makes sure to describe to us what her tone sounds like most of the time.

I read through tapes where you can see that her voice is now angry and stern as she’s describing an event that truly hurt her feelings and angried her. In other cases you can sense pure sadness, no anger detected….it goes on like this, all these different emotions that this girl goes through recorded on all theses different tapes.

In some tapes, the way she was addressing the person that she was talking about was in a way that seemed that she wanted them to truly feel guilty and hate themselves, I mean yeah they were not nice people but some cases were not as bad as others and by herself saying certain things and blaming them for ending her own life can lead them to do the same. Two wrongs don’t make a right I think. Don’t get me wrong, I still think that she is the victim here and that she did go through a lot but why behave like the people that bullied you if you know how it feels ?

“This time, for the first time, I saw the possibilities in giving up. I even found hope in it.” — Hannah Baker

Why make it look that ending your own life is the best thing to do ? There are so many different ways this could have been handled.

I feel really bad that Hannah felt so alone that she did what she did. But I don’t agree when people say poor thing….Yeah of course I get it, humans are very empathetic, towards the dead. That’s one of the issues that was bugging me here. None of the people I discussed this story with mentioned how suicide can affect the people left behind.

Don’t pity the dead, pity the living. By that I mean, her parents for example. Do you think that it was fair on them that she ended her life? I mean yeah she was bullied and it’s cruel, but her decision was quite selfish as well. Can you imagine being a parent and losing a child this way? I can’t.

Among the people that were cruel to Hannah there were also people that really cared for her and felt guilty that they didn’t see the signs.

What I mean by all this is that, if you have read this story or watched the series whilst going through a tough time in your life don’t let it influence you in making you think that it’s the best idea to do to make the people around you pay for what they did to you. Owe yourself the respect to speak up for yourself and seek help. It’s ok to seek help, it’s ok to admit that you’re going through a rough patch, most of us have bad days, many of us have been bullied but it’s the people among us that are brave enough to fight back are the people that I admire.

Fight back, don’t let bullies gang up on you. They smell fear.

It’s ok to be afraid, when you feel scared the universe is giving you a chance to be brave. So be brave and don’t give up. You deserve to be happy but only you can create your own happiness, no one is going to do it for you.

This review was written with good intentions, I hope you enjoyed it and thank you for reading. Sorry for the long post, this subject is sensitive for me, I have seen what suicide does to the family it leaves behind.

If you’re thinking about it seek help (google your local suicide prevention phone number), love yourself ❤ Life is beautiful, don’t end yours because someone treated you badly, prove them wrong ❤

Thank you for reading.

As always, peace :3

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t written in a while, I was on holiday. Still sad that it’s already over. Amsterdam was good to me <3. Anyways, I have for you a new book review !! 😀

This book gave me a mixture of emotions. There were parts of it which I LOVED  and LOVED. Other small details made it feel a bit dragging for me but in all fairness, it is the first book for a new series. Overall – I LOVED IT.

Let me start by talking about the cover. I purchased the hardback version (like always haha), the book sleeve is very nice,  I think that the artwork that was chosen is really cool. A big raven flying across the front and then at the bottom right just below the raven’s feet there it the title- The Raven Boys.

Upon opening the book I could see the title page and a page with some cool quotes. Here’s one that I liked: ‘’A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.’’- Oscar Wilde.

My curiosity has been peaked at this point, this book is mysterious. I love that.

The story starts with a Prologue about the main character – Blue. Yeah her name is Blue, how original it made me smile when I read it the first time. (Blue is also my favourite colour). So Blue is a young teenager that lives with her mum and aunts, the only thing that makes this house full of ladies stand out is, the fact that they are all psychics and really good ones actually. Blue wasn’t one tho, she still had a gift. Her gift was that she could amplify her mother’s and aunt’s powers. Not so much fun for her but really useful to others.

Blue always got the same warning from her mother and aunts- they always warned her that when she meets her true love she will kiss him and he will die. Not such good news for any young girl aye?

Blue always kept this warning at the back of her head while she went along with her life. It was really a boring life, apart from living in a house full of eccentric and crazy women whom she loved deeply.

I don’t want to spoil this book for anybody so I will skim through the story whilst trying to leave out the details 🙂 (the really big ones at least !).

The Raven Boys – A group of 4 friends that all went to the same private school. I loved how the characters have been introduced and created in this story. They are very real, very complicated and very human. We have Gansey who is the leader of the pack, full of curiosity, polite, very intelligent and rich. Ronan (my personal fave), Ronan has this very tough exterior and is the troublesome one, getting into fights, has a smart mouth, always guarded but at the same time he cared deeply for his friends and protected them whenever it was needed. There is Adam, the only non rich raven boy that came from a trailer park and a not so nice dad, Adam was the one that studied the hardest because he wanted a better life, his character is cool and collected but there is a twist later on in the book – it was brilliant. Last but not least there is Noah, Noah the quiet one, Noah the brave one, I have become attached to this character very much he has a very interesting story.

Anyways, those are the boys. I really enjoyed the story when they were introduced, there is something about how Maggie wrote about all of them and about their friendship. It was brilliant to me.

They cross paths with Blue because they all wanted to look for the same thing (but for their own reasons which I will try to not to go into too much detail so I don’t ruin the book for you guys !! haha xxxx).

All five of them wanted to find the ley line. What is a ley line you ask ? In the book it is described to be this invisible line of energy that if found and awoken can help the finder locate Glendover – An old lost king that will grant a favour/wish to whomever finds him. Cool huh ?

During the search for the ley line they all make beautiful discoveries and find great clues whilst at the same time all becoming closer as friends. Blue and Adam seem to share small affections towards each other but Blue always held back because of two reasons 1) (this is the simple reason) because she didn’t want to kiss Adam and risk killing him. 2) (the not so simple reason) Because before she befriended the Raven boys she saw Gansey’s spirit walking on a spirit road. He spoke to her too, told her his name. Her mum and aunts had told her that there are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on spirit road on St.Mark’s Eve. Either he’s her true love….or she killed him. Hmm so what do have here ? A love triangle ? Oh I hope not !

I know I know, this book sounds complicated, and it is. It’s the best part of it. It’s very unpredictable which is something that I love in books.

If you are a lover of magic and all things strange (like me), you will enjoy this book very much. It is a clear starter / taster for a great and magical series that will include a lot of adventure. I cannot wait to read the second book. Small warning, this book has a lot of plots going on in it so try to stick it out 🙂 I think that closure to them will come along in the books to come.

Thank you for reading, I hope that you enjoyed my post. Please share your opinions/comments in the comments section !

As always, Peace :3

For fun: I went on a Book Haul !!!

Hi everyone ! 😀

Sorry I have been away for a couple of days and not posted anything! Work has been a bit crazy this week.

I am waiting for books to arrive in the mail (yes I went on an online book haul – I’m guilty) so I can read and write new book reviews for you guys. It seems like forever waiting!! Is it just me or do they take forever to arrive ?

I have ordered a good few actually, here they are in no particular order:

  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K Rowling

Ok I have to be honest, anything that has to do with Harry Potter I love. Like a lot lol. This book has been on my TBR list for a very long time and I finally bought it. I mean come on, how can I not buy a book that has the story of the three brothers ? And all the other ones in it ? And more Harry Potter things in my life? Haha .I could not resist having some new magic in my bookish life ! ❤

  • Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I have read some mixed reviews about this one. Some love it, others not so much. I bought it because it peaked my curiosity and it seems like something that I would like. Did any of you guys read it? If so let me know in the comments ! No spoilers tho pleaseeee ! 😀 I will review this one for you for sure 🙂 .

  • The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Ok ok so this is a famous one. Famous for breaking our heart I know, I know. I am not one to be a huge fan of sad and heartbreaking stuff but with all the hype around this book (and movie), I cannot hold back any longer and have to see what all the fuss is about. I have not seen the movie, most of my friends have and others have read the book. All my friends have informed me to prepare myself for an emotional rollercoaster. Also, they advised that a box of tissues by my side would be handy too. Wow this book must be powerful. John Green has a very nice reputation as an author so I must have a look at this. I’m sure that I will cry uncontrollably haha but this is a must read !

  • The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Yes, I am a hoarder for all books that have magical stories ! haha. I can’t help myself. I had to buy this come on, it’s the first book of a magical new series that has a bit of love, adventure and mystery. Every YA- Fantasy fan’s dream. 😛 . I really do hope that this book is as good as it seems to be from the reviews that I have read about it. Also, the cover looks really cool. I love the artwork that was chosen for it.

  • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll

Alice !! I must read your adventures! I have been wanting this book for a while also. Alice in wonderland is not my favourite story from my childhood but it still is part of it. These stories remain close to my heart, I needed this one :P. Also, I have never read the ‘’Through the Looking-Glass’’ stories so I’m super excited about this one. Had to buy it.

  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – Gryffindor Edition by J.K Rowling

This was a total fangirl purchase. I was sold. I was sold as soon as I received an email from Bookdepository saying that the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Editions are now available for purchase. Omg you can even choose the cover of the house that you prefer !!!! Gryffindor for life <3. So yeah, had to get this one. I couldn’t leave a book like that homeless, I already have a perfect spot on my bookshelf for it ❤ haha I regret nothing.

  • Lenore: Cooties (Colour Edition) by Roman Dirge

This book was a random purchase. The title made me curious and the book cover intrigued me even more because the character drawn on it looks like something from Tim Burton’s drawings (I am a huge fan of Tim Burton). I will definitely keep you guys in the loop and tell you what this book was all about and try to give a good detailed review about it so we can share  ideas 😀 .

I love using Bookdepository for buying books online, they have free shipping worldwide and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the free bookmarks that I get with every single book that I buy (wanna have a look at some books ? check out here: http://www.bookdepository.com/?a_aid=kimsbookshelf )

I hope that this post was fun for you, I really hope that it will infuse and trigger some nice discussions or bring up some questions. I love interacting with you all 🙂 If there is a book from the above that you would wish to see being reviewed first please let me know in the comments quick so I can get right on it when it arrives. 🙂 Thanks again. As always, peace.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for :

  • A quick read, this book has very short chapters which is great if you want to read quickly and stay motivated.
  • This book is something that I would recommend to someone that wants to get out of a reading slump. It is not a difficult read and the story really flows and it has only 306 pages (excluding acknowledgments etc..)
  • This book will be a great introducer to someone that would like to have a go at YA- Fiction – Contemporary. It is in it’s on cute way a story about love, but at the same time not cheesy at all ! It will keep you on your toes the entire time.
  • Someone who just wants to relax, drink some tea and get hooked on a tale of adventure, love, many more emotions and witness someone taking a risk that will change their life forever.

I want to start about this book by talking about the really nice cover it has. I purchased the hardback version (love hardbacks too much) and the book’s sleeve feels really nice and smooth- I love it. The book is not intimidatingly thick for readers that are beginners (yay go for it newbies!). As soon as I opened the book and flipped through the first pages I smiled, there is a quote from my favourite book called The little prince (book review available here on my blog :3 !). The quote is this: ‘’Here is my secret. It’s quite simple: One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.’’ – Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince.  (sorry for the not so good photo)

Kim's Bookshelf (2)

I instantly like this book.

I was also completely smitten with all the cute minimalist illustrations the book has here and there along the way. There are illustrations to show the reader an email inbox screen, doodles from Maddy, instant messaging conversations and loads more cute stuff… If you are a visual person (like me !) you will love these little touches.

There is also a movie trailer that I have come across for this book, I have not seen the movie but I have to be honest, the trailer made me tear up a little. Now I know how most of us book lovers feel about the movies about books that we have read…some enjoy watching the movie after, some of us don’t. I have to be honest, I am one of those that tries to remain as loyal to the book as much as I can, imagining is so much better for me ! But it is also hard to not watch the movie sometimes (my curiosity is very hard to control). I always think of the Harry Potter series when I think about this debate. I have read all the books (3 times haha) and have even seen the movies a trillion times haha ! But it’s hard to beat those movie remakes in my opinion…they rock !. But anyway 🙂 I wasn’t sure if I should share the youtube link to the trailer on here, wanted to ask you guys about it. So what do you think ? Should I share the link  or would it be too much of a spoiler? Let me know in the comments 🙂

About the story. Wow this book, so many emotions went through me reading it. Madeline Whittier our main character here, is an 18 year old girl that has NEVER been outside. Can you imagine ? When I first read it in the book it made me really think how sad that was but Madeline is a very optimistic girl, she didn’t miss the outside. Wanna know why? Because she never experienced it. She was used to her home and her really sweet nurse Carla (who is totally my favourite character) and of course her mom slash official doctor.

Madeline has a very rare illness that makes her allergic to everything. Yup, you read that right, everything, everything. It could be a new fabric or the the grass or the rain or tasting new food or just breathing the outside air. When I was reading the book in the very beginning I really felt sorry for this girl, but her personality rocks. She’s a bookworm (how can I not like her?), she spends a lot of quality time with her mum playing games and they always think of something fun to do daily (inside obviously !) to keep the days going and to keep any depressions away. Her mom constantly monitors her vitals every hour, it’s that serious.

This ‘’system’’ was all working smooth like butter, up until everything changes again.

A new family moves over next door to Madeline. As every person stuck inside would do, she went to her window to see who they were. You know, observe them, get a good look.

That’s when she saw him. That is the point where this story gets good. (don’t worry I’m not gonna spoil it ! 😛 )

This book will take you onto the sweetest story ever. His name was Olly, he and Madeline eventually spot each other from their bedroom windows and begin to find creative ways to communicate and start to slowly know eachother. The story becomes beautiful from then on. I especially enjoyed reading the parts where Maddy (Madeline) describes how her relationship with her mother changes when she befriends Olly. It was described in a very realistic way how sometimes Maddy would be torn apart about wanting to spend more time instant messaging with the boy of her dreams rather than her mum, the woman whom has been taking care of her since birth. I really understood Maddy and what she was feeling during this time. Like wanting to split into two. It is part of growing up of course, but keep in mind how this was all so very extremely new to her. She felt guilty for wanting to spend time with someone else other than her mom but she knew how much she loved her mom. So why was she feeling like that? She thinks to herself.

Friendship with Olly evolves into much more and the story is written so sweetly, it’s a total page turner. You’re not gonna want to stop reading this book, I’m telling you I read it in a day haha. I was so hooked.

But how can you love someone you can’t touch ? Or go outside with ?  Or share a kiss with ?

But the greatest risk is not taking one. Yeah, risks will be taken here and your suspense will go from zero to 100 in a second while reading this book.

How far will Madeline and Olly go to be with each other ? Check out the book if you wanna find out 🙂 .

Also, this book was shockingly unpredictable. From what I wrote above you might think that I’m nuts for calling it that, but I promise you that you will be surprised like I was. Seriously, it has a twist that I REALLY REALLY did not see coming. It made me feel a mix of emotions (not going to state what they are because you might guess and I spoil it for you).

Check it out !

I’m sure you can tell that I enjoyed this book very much ( 😛 )

Bitten By Kelley Armstrong

***Calling all fans of strong female fictional characters*** 😛

SPOILER ALERT

Yeah you read the title right, hi bookworms !! 😀

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong is the first book in the Women of the Other World series.

This book will keep you hooked from the first page up until the last. Elena Michaels didn’t know that her lover Clay was a werewolf until the day that he bit her, changing her life for ever.

You can imagine how angry with Clay she was when he did this to her. She did not want it, the transition is painful and long but the most unique thing about Elena is this, she is the first ever female werewolf. Cool huh? Yeah it gets so much better.

Elena doesn’t want anything to do with Clay’s pack and decides to go to the city to start a new life….a secret life. Being a hidden werewolf living in the city and trying to have a normal relationship was not as easy as she thought, her natural instincts are hard to fight, the wolf inside her is strong.

Then, a series of brutal murders threatens the pack, Elena is forced with an impossible choice.

Abandon her pack ? The only people who truly understand her new nature or help them to save the lover that ruined her life with one bite and still loves her to the moon and back?

Elena has grown into a strong woman not to be messed with but even she has days where she felt weak, she just kept going. She is a werewolf after all.

Exciting, imaginative, very well created and written beautifully. This book has introduced me to a new and amazing series which I will definitely continue reading.

Thank you for visiting, I hope you enjoyed this post and that it has peaked your interest :). Peace.

The Witch of Salt and Storm by Kendall Kulper

Hi everyone! Me again 🙂

The witch of salt and storm by Kendall Kulper is a powerful tale of love, jealousy, sacrifice and of course, magic.

Avery is a young girl born within a bloodline of strong island witches, the Roe women. The Roe’s have been protecting Prince Island and it’s whaling sailors since the first Roe made the island her home. Avery, the main character has been living with her grandmother and being thought the ways of the Roes so when it is her turn to unlock the magic within her she will be ready to continue their legacy. The problem is that her mother knows all too well what it takes to be a Roe witch….what you must sacrifice so she takes Avery away from her grandmother and forbids her from practicing magic with the intention to save her a lot of pain and grief.

Avery is a determined young woman, she doesn’t understand what her mother tries to teach her and rebels against her. One night Avery’s life will change, she was gifted with reading dreams, having the ability to see what they mean….she had a dream, she saw her death. She must now find a way to go to her grandmother and seek help to unlock her magic so she can protect herself from her death, the only problem is that her mother (also a witch) has tied her to her village with magic. How will avery break her mother’s magic in time to reach her grandmother and save herself from death so she can become the next Roe witch ?

Read the book and go on the journey of this young girl, so determined, so strong both emotionally and physically. This book will show you that nothing is what it seems and that life has a way of not turning out as you’d hoped….or as easy as you’d hope it will be at least.

I am very excited to read the next book to this series which is shown to be titled Return to the World of Salt and Storm.

I enjoyed this book very much and hope that you will too if it crosses your path.

Thank you so much for reading 🙂 I hope you enjoyed it! Peace.

Kim

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Hey guys ! New review 😀

As a lover of all things magical I have to say this book has kept me on my toes while reading it. Love, magic, adventure, courage, pain and competition are words that come to mind when I remember this book.

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn (there is a map in the book !) a set of triplets is born, 3 sisters. Each of them are born with a gift, there is Mirabella – a fierce elemental that has the ability to control fire, wind, water and light, there is Katherine – a poisoner that is immune to the deadliest of poisons and then there is Arsinoe (my fave !) – the naturalist that is known to have the ability to bloom the reddest of roses.

Sounds magical aye ? But there is a twist  !  The three sisters are separated at birth and sent to live in villages according to their gifts, they will each be mentored and trained to make the best of their gift because once they turn sixteen, they must fight to the death to win the throne of Fennbirn ! What an exciting book that is rumored to have a sequel book in the making !!!! (so excited)

The way the characters are described and their gifts is truly amazing, while reading I could see it all so clearly. I enjoyed it so much and it is such an unpredictable book !

Ohh there were times when it truly got me angry because of how certain chapters unfolded (angry in a way that I was caught up in the story and loved the characters so much haha).

This is a book that you will enjoy should you wish to runaway to a new world and get lost in it for a while, I am really excited to read the second book when it is published. I will deffo post a review of it for you guys! The story does not end in the first book !

Which princess do you want to be queen?

(three books are shown in the image above, not because there are 3 books but there are 3 exclusive book covers to choose from! Depends on which princess you favour!)

Thank you so much for reading, I hope you liked it, peace.
